FASTag Latest Update: How to get FASTag wallet ID and activate it

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Highways and Roads made it mandatory for all vehicles to switch to electronic toll payment. It introduced a new electronic toll payment system called FASTag. These FASTags will be applicable for both commercial and private vehicles. While the deadline for the implementation was December 1, it has now been pushed to January 15.

You can buy FASTags from authorized banks such as Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and more. You can also get one from select petrol pumps, RTOs, toll plazas and from Paytm as well. Just like mobile wallets, you will have to recharge the FASTag account for the amount to be debited at toll plazas. But, in order to recharge, FASTag wallet ID is important. Here is where you can find the wallet ID.

Step 1:Buy the FASTag from an authorized bank or any other service provider. You will have to provide your vehicle registration number, driving license number and more to get one. There are some cashback offers that you can avail too.

Step 2:Once the registration is complete, you will get the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology-based sticker delivered to your house.

Step 3:The courier that you receive will have the sticker and a welcome letter detailing the steps on how to activate one. The letter will have details like your name, tag sequence number, customer ID, and the vehicle number. It will also have your wallet ID. This you will need for the activation and all other purposes

Now that you have the FASTag wallet ID, you can login to the portal and load money to the wallet. Every time you pass through a toll booth on the national highway, money will automatically get debited from your wallet. An SMS confirming the transaction will also be sent to your mobile number and registered email address.

How can you get a FASTag?

why and how of this RFID tag!

Under the One Nation One Tag scheme, having the FASTag RFID tag on a four-wheeler in India will become mandatory from 1st December 2019. In this report, we answer all the question that you might have related to this electric toll collection technology.

•

Starting December 1st, all four-wheelers in India must have FASTag RFID stickers affixed on their windscreen for making payments at NHAI toll plazas across India. The use of this technology promises to ensure a smooth passage through toll plazas across India’s national highways by negating cash transactions. But from where can you buy a FAStag for your four-wheeler? What are the charges? How will you be able to recharge? Are there any benefits of using the same over cash? In this report, we answer all these questions and a lot more about FASTag. Read along!

What is FASTag and how does it work?

FASTag is the Electronic Toll Collection program on toll plazas by National Highway Authority of India. It works on the principle of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The tag needs to be affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle in such a way that the sensor at the toll plaza can read it. When a vehicle passes through a dedicated FASTag lane, the funds are automatically deducted from the linked prepaid account. With the help of FASTag, vehicles do not need to stop at a toll plaza for cash transactions. Hence, it allows for a near-continuous flow of traffic and prevents long queues. A FASTag is valid for five years since the day of activation. One simply needs to keep recharging the linked account to use the same during this period.

How can you get a FASTag?

Buying a FAStag for your vehicle is very easy. On the purchase of a new vehicle, the dealer will sell you one by default. For older vehicles, one can buy a new FASTag at any of the Point of Sale (POS) locations at the NHAI Toll Plazas. Alternatively, one can also directly get a FASTag from any of the private or public sector banks which have tied-up with NHAI. Currently, the list includes Syndicate Bank, Axis Bank, IDFC Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India and ICICI Bank. You can also buy a FASTag through Paytm.

What documents are required to purchase a FASTag?

If you are buying a FAStag from any of the POS locations, you need to submit a form along with a copy of the following documents. One must also carry the original copy of these documents for verification.

1: Vehicle’s registration certificate (RC)

2. Vehicle owner’s recent passport size photograph

3. KYC documents (Driving license, PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID Card or Aadhar Card)

The required documents may differ depending upon whether the tag is being issued for private or commercial use. For this, make sure you check the list of documents required from you head out to buy one.

                                    What is FASTag?

• FASTag is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled sticker affixed on the windscreens of vehicles.
• Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is used to make toll payments directly from an account, which is linked to the FASTag, while the vehicle is in motion.
• It comes under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program that was launched by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL).

                               How does FASTag work?

• Whenever a vehicle passes through the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lane of the Toll Plaza, the Toll Plaza system will capture the FASTag details like Tag ID, vehicle class, etc., and send them for processing to the acquiring bank.
• The Acquiring bank will send the request to the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) Mapper to verify the tag details.
• Once the Tag ID is validated, NETC Mapper responds with details like Tag Status, Vehicle class, VRN, etc. If the Tag ID is not present in the NETC Mapper, it will respond as the Tag ID not registered.
• The acquirer host will calculate the appropriate toll fare and initiate a debt request to the NETC system after the successful validation of Tag ID from NETC Mapper.

• NETC System will switch the debit request to the respective issuer bank for debiting the customer’s account.
• Then, the issuer host will debit the linked tag holder’s account and send an SMS alert to the tag holder. The issuer host will then send the response message to the NETC system. If the response is not sent within a specific time, the transaction will be considered as Deemed Accepted.
• NETC system notifies the response to the acquirer host and the acquirer host will notify to the respective toll plaza system.

FASTag – Working, Advantages & Disadvantages

What are the incentives provided by the government to promote FASTag?

• To promote the use of FASTags, the vehicles with FASTags will enjoy 2.5% cashback until March 2020, while cash payment would invite double the toll charge.
• The FASTag issuance fee of Rs.100 is waived off. However, customers will have to pay Rs.250 as the security deposit and maintain a minimum balance of Rs.150.

What can be the future applications?

• Integration with the e-way bill system– will result in a more efficient track and trace system. It will check revenue leakage at the toll plaza. It will help revenue authorities check whether goods vehicles are actually headed to the specified destination. Suppliers and transporters can keep track of their vehicles through SMS alerts generated at each tag reader-enabled toll plaza.
• Additional uses: FASTag can be used at other facilities like fuel payment and parking charges

What are the objectives of the NETC program? (Benefits)

Some of the objectives of the NETC program include:

• Use FASTag to help reduce the waiting time, fuel consumption and vehicle’s operating cost.
• Accommodate the increasing traffic without additional lanes
• Eliminate acceleration, idling and the harmful vehicular emissions using FASTag
• Reduce congestion around plazas
• Reduce pollution
• To provide customers with the flexibility of paying their plaza bill
• Reduce cash handling which helps enhance audit control by centralising user accounts
• Improved data collection and information to monitor traffic and rework the government’s toll policy
• Promotes digital payments and keep tabs on vehicles and the toll booths
• Reduce the cost of storage and transportation of cash and labour at the tollbooths.

What are the disadvantages?

• RFID– during initial stages of implementation there were issues regarding RFID reader. Most of the time it was not working. Sometimes handheld devices also become faulty
• Server availability– If the server fails, it will result in the failure of the automated electronic deduction system.
• Unemployment- toll plazas had hired many people for deducting toll. They will become unemployed as there will no need for them.
• Ownership issues– owner’s registration and bank details will be linked to the FASTag account, so in case the owner sells the vehicle, it is not clear whether a new owner will be able to drive the car with the same FASTag or not.
• Safety of card– as it comes in tag form, it may be stolen or lost easily. In such a situation one will need to notify the authority to block the FASTag account
• Wrongly charged– there were many instances of charging the double amount of the original amount due to some technical issues.

What is the way forward?

• There may be competition. The best service provider will be given some benefits or some awards
• The government should encourage more and more agencies for recharging and providing services for FASTag
• Technical issues should be corrected. E.g. issues of the RFID reader, issues of charging more than the actual amount of toll, etc.
• One separate lane should be there for FASTag users.
• Network availability should be ensured all-round the year.
• Grievance redressal mechanism should be more and more customer friendly
• Alternate employment generation plans should be made by the government to provide employment to those who lost their jobs due to technology transformation.
• Highway sathi- an initiative of Metro, can be implemented for the effective and smooth FASTag system implementation. It brings various recharging platforms together for FasTags and the local ones. An ambulance service can be connected to the same, it will encourage people for online transactions. It will make it easy for the ambulance to locate the user on the highway with the help of GPS.

Conclusion:

Expanding the use of FASTag to reduce human intervention and vehicle congestion during the toll collection is a step in the right direction as it helps increase mobility and reduces time, which is significant while transporting perishables. This will not only help the government to reduce time consumption but also ensure transparency and enhance data collection

FASTag and its problems

FASTag and its problems

Nitin Gadkari is proving to be an earnest Road Transport and Highways Minister, serious about improving things. He has to his credit the commendable Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, which sadly has not been effectively enforced due to the reluctance of various authorities and state governments. The FASTag that was to have become mandatory for all vehicles in India from December 2019 is another of Gadkari's appreciable initiatives. Unfortunately, it too has run into various implementation difficulties with the deadline first being shifted to December 15, and then January 15, 2020.

FASTag and digital payments for toll via a Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) chip card sticker pasted on the vehicle's windscreen, is a great idea. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is supposed to be implementing this electronic toll collection (ETC) program with the aim of reducing the waiting time at toll booths and ensuring smooth flow of traffic. Congestion at toll booths presently results in an estimated annual loss due to wastage of fuel of over Rs 12,000 crores!

FASTag has many merits, because apart from reducing the waiting time, it could also increase the total revenue from toll. With cash payments, toll booth operators can strike under the table deals with regular users and transporters. But FASTag card readers are connected to automatic barriers at toll booths and the chances of a vehicle driving through without paying toll, are slim. Electronic payment also means a direct deposit in a bank account, thus reducing mistakes in counting and collection. Cash collection is also fraught with the danger of looting and thefts and to prevent this, most toll plazas, especially in states with law and order issues like Bihar and U.P, have armed guards posted 24/7. An electronic payment system would reduce the need for such private armed guards and display of muscle power.

Benefits of Using FASTag:

Benefits of Using FASTag

Benefits of Using FASTag:

• Ease of payment No need to carry cash for the toll transactions saves time
• Near non-stop movement of vehicles leading to lower fuel cost.
• Online Recharge FASTag can be recharged online through Credit Card / Debit Card / NEFT/ RTGS or Net banking
• SMS alerts are sent to the FASTag holder for toll transactions, low balance, etc.
• It has an online Portal for customers.
• Your FASTag has a validity of 5 Years.
• Environmental benefit like reduced air pollution and less use of paper is beneficial.
• Social benefit like less time taking toll payment is hassle-free and analytics for better highway management
• Economic benefit like the reduced effort in management at the toll plaza and the reduced effort in monitoring centrally is also beneficial

NOTE:

Vehicle owners can visit any of the Point of Sale (POS. locations at Toll Plazas / Bank branches to collect FASTag offline. The FASTag account can be operated online using the issuer agency’s web portal. The account can be recharged online using debit/credit card/ RTGS/NEFT or through Netbanking.
